The holiday season is the best time to create new traditions. Honestly for me, making these handmade ornaments is what made Christmas feel like it did when I was a kid. One way to make your celebrations even more special is by crafting your own handmade felt Christmas ornaments. Not only do these ornaments add a personal touch to your holiday décor, but they also make for delightful gifts and family heirlooms.
Let’s explore the materials you’ll need, step-by-step instructions, and some creative ideas to inspire your holiday crafting journey.
What you need:
FELT
Wool felt is definitely the best option! I love this Benzie brand here on Etsy
I've also used acrylic crafting felt and honestly, it's not bad either. It's usually not as thick and durable as wool felt, but I say use what you have if you can (:
EMBELLISHMENTS
These rainbow seed beads from Amazon have been my favorite little embellishments to use this season! This pack of 4mm ones has so many fun options too and it's under $7!
Another adorable pack of rainbow beads, but STAR SHAPED! I used one of these to top my Christmas tree ornament and it added such a special touch.
These little golden seed beads go such a long way! I've made so many projects with them and it's hardly made a dent from the small package I got here.
This velvet ribbon is the perfect little topper to any ornament! Also goes such a long ways. Here's the one I use!
This little box of sequins will last you forever. They're so tedious to add, but slow crafts really are the secret to making Christmas feel like Christmas again!
I ordered some of this and it hasn't gotten here yet, BUT I adore this color!! Chiffon ribbon really has a way of adding the perfect topping to ornaments framed in embroidery hoops too!
FABRI-SOLVY
Fabri-solvy is so versatile and easy to use. But make sure you get STICKY Fabri-Solvy. They have tons of different options and this is the only one that you can print on that's sticky! Here's the ones I use.
SCISSORS
It's so worth it to invest in a pair of these Gingher fabric scissors. It's one of the first big girl purchases I made when I started embroidery and they have been absolutely worth every penny! They're especially helpful with felt because no one likes to hack away at felt with dull scissors. lol.
NEEDLES & THREAD
DMC chenille size 22 needles are my go to. They're not too thick and you can fit a considerable amount of thread in them! You can find them in my shop here.
STUFFING
One of my favorite party tricks is using left over threads and/or felt to stuff my ornaments! But if you don't have any saved, here's some good inexpensive stuffing you can grab.
TEMPLATES
Here's a PDF download I put together for 5 little ornaments. It's got step by step instructions and video links.
And, as promised here is a FREE ornament download for you! This one doesn't come with instructions, so feel free to use your creativity and give it your own twist! Make sure and tag me on social media @stay.at.home.artist so I can see what you create (:
Happy crafting, and may your holidays be filled with joy and creativity!
